Troy is a city in Asia Minor (modern Turkey) that is known only by legend. Homer wrote the Iliad and Odyssey, two
epic tales about Greeks trying to capture Troy (Iliad) and Odysseus trying to go back home (Odyssey). It is not
entirely known who the Troians were and what Troy really was.
^
The city itself was found by the German archaeologist Heinrich Schliemann. But today there are people who dispute
that he actually found Troy. If Troy was a Greek state or not is not known either. By comparison of art and language
some scientists believe to have found out that Troy was a Hittite vassal.
^
It is certain, though, that the tales of Troy represent the everlasting struggle between Europe and Asia, culminating
in the Persian wars and Alexander's conquest.
